Below is "Wanted Dead Or Alive" and "It's My Life". "It's My Life" becomes a completely different song and illicits a different emotion. I think that's cool... If it's YOUR BAND and YOUR SONG, then I say you've got artistic license to do whatever you want. If you want to re-package & re-interpret something down the line, then go for it. I've seen MANY, MANY, MANY bands do songs live, that are QUITE DIFFERENT from the recorded album versions... Just 'cause that's how the song has "evolved" (from initial recording, to the most recent "live" versions). I know when I record stuff, I'm always kinda paranoid, trying to figure out "okay... am I sure this song is 100% DONE?". And then you'll get it all mastered up into a final version... And then go "hmmm... I think I should switch this part up with that part, or take this lame solo thing out". So I don't know if you can ever really "finish" a song... You're ALWAYS gonna be tweaking it. So if Bon Jovial wants to release some "updated" versions of their songs? If I were a fan, I'd probably think that was super-cool!!! For another example... I wish Tool would re-record and release a studio version of the updated Stinkfist. Like, everyone who is a Tool fan, knows every second of every single one of their songs like the back of their hand. (They're just really... meticulous fanboy-type fans who analyze everything, lol.) I remember when I first heard/saw the "extended" version of this song (at Maple Leaf Gardens)? It was probably one of my top three mark-out moments ever at a concert. 'Cause everyone's grooving along with the song, and expecting the next part; thinking they know what's gonna come next... And then they threw in this false finish, curve ball spot which totally makes the song (in my opinion). Fuckin' awesome swerve! So yeah, I wish they'd re-do a studio version like THIS: (From 5:58 to 7:15 is the extra part, that's not on the album. Danny Carey is a freakin' machine. One of my top five fave drummers ever. It's just too bad someone already did this [prior to 1972, apparently]. )

Don't worry there's a few more idiots.... I kid I kid.. Also you can't forget about them Eminem song Sing for the moment... Well considering 'Sing for the Moment' sampled 'Dream On' and Joe Perry actually played the solo at the end of the song.... well, that sorta explains itself.

And then this piece of shit...
Why don't you go back to Starbucks and sit there with your latte & lap top, and write an ORIGINAL song? Dork. And then maybe you can go get some more cool tattoos! YEAH! And then go buy some new skinny jeans, and black-rimmed glasses; and then go to the mall and bullshit all the 17 year-old girls in the food court about how "sensitive" and "misunderstood" you are. YEAH! They DIG that shit! Maybe you'll get some action!!!

the argument that people are making about "oh there's only so many chord progressions" has been scientifically proven to be bullshit. I listen to a lot of CBC Radio 1 and I remember YEARS ago hearing an interview with a woman on As it Happens, who did a study on this, and found that we have another couple hundred years of song writing before we'll be forced to start repeating ourselves. Now admittedly it was so long ago that I can't remember her scientific methods were or what university she was from, so I can't find you the details on it, but I assure you bert is right, people are just lazy.
That being said, much like how the eye interprets symmetry as beauty, there are certain chord progressions that the human ear & brain interprets as most beautiful. (theres some Pythagorean explanation in there that I don't know, I'm sure of it) and since record companies are more concerned about what people will want to buy, and what will be the most catchy and popular, the same "special" chord progressions get used over and over again. As for the artists writing the songs, sometimes it's laziness, sometimes it's indicative of a lack of creativity, and sometimes in the case of George Harrisons "my Sweet lord" it can be a really random coincidence.
The reason we don't hear more uproar about these rip off songs on a regular basis, is because (as with alice cooper and paul stanley) if the record company thinks they have a hit on their hands, they will cut backroom deals with the original artists before the rip-off is released in order to nip any potential litigation in the bud. Why do you think Oaisis isn't sued for every song they release? it's because they've already secretly paid off the original writers!
Speaking of which I went to an oasis concert ONCE, the tickets were free and I wanted to hang out with my friend who was taking her visiting Irish cousin who was a fan (don't want any of you thinking I'd ACTUALLY spend money on that tripe) and through the whole show I was going "wow... that's bang-a-gong, by t-rex! wait... no it isn't... Dude! that's the drum riff from iggy pop's nightclubbing! wait... no it isn't... oh great here's the fake imagine song...." It was EMBARRASSING! every other song was some shitty rip-off of an awesome old school song that the retard audience had never heard of cause they're too lazy to learn about music from anything but top current 40 radio. "OHHHH OASIS R SOOO GREAT!" No sir, they're not, you just don't know FUCK ALL about music. Don't kid yourself!!
Whatever man. My beef with popular music is as with all things: Those who don't know their history are doomed to repeat it. SO FUCKING LEARN YOUR HISTORY BITCHES!

ooo cool! I had to share that with my (retired) Audio-engeneering prof dad. I may be missing class a few tuesdays from now because I'll be joining him at an AES "music and the brain" seminar. I don't remember all the details of it, but I think it'll be dealing with the same subject matter as that book. I can share what I learn if it interests anyone. I can't believe I didn't comment on this before but just cause it's your band and your song don't mean you're free of litigation. It's all about ownership. Take John Fogerthy and when he was sued by Fanatasy Records for plagiarizing HIS OWN SONG. He had given up copyright of the material he wrote when he was with Creedance Clearwater Revival to fantasy records. when he released a solo song called Old Man Down By The Road on another record label, fantasy records sued him for plagiarizing Run through the Jungle, a song he initially wrote. Here's a link: cip.law.ucla.edu/cases/case_fantfogerty.htmlIn my view the whole trial calls into question wether it is possible to have a "song writing style" without becoming self-plagiarizing. At a certain point one wonders if it is inevitable for an artist to eventually become a creative ouroboros. This thread does seem to indicated many long term popular artist do reach that breaking point. heh... Hi my name is Meryle and I'm a music nerd.

Srsly! The whole thing reeked of petty 'legal loop-hole' cash-grabbing. But I loves me some CCR!

Phil Colins had covered a song with almost the exact same intro. It is called "You can't hurry love."(1982) Which is a cover of a The Supremes song which dates back to 1966. www.youtube.com/watch?v=BAu4mJ_3Y9U

UUUUUUURRRRRRRAAAAAAGGH!! FUCK Phill Collins! Stab him in the eye with a pen!!!
and as far as Jet goes... shit, did they do anything original? They make The Darkness sound as original as Led Zepplin!! ...oh, wait... Nvrmd, forgot about those damn pesky blues musicians... REGARDLESS... Iggy Pop rules, Jet sucks my (imaginary) balls but I won't lie... I will shake my bum on the dancefloor to both those songs, I don't care, it's fun.
but most importantly PHILL COLLINS MUST DIE FOR THE DAMAGE HE'S DONE TO MUSIC! I bet he thinks he's a better drummer better than Ringo Starr... idiot.

My sarcasm detector is broken, so you need to confirm, that is a joke, right?

Though it's probably unique enough to earn a pass: But speaking of Phil "Disney Cartoon" Collins (whose current output is almost as shmaltzy and pathetic as Bryan Adams'), there IS a song of his... or maybe it's a Genesis tune... which I've noticed is quite similar to some other widely-known song. Can't hear either (the original or the copy) in my head right now though. It'll come to me...
