I had mentioned this in the greasy spoon thread but it wasnt the place to elaborate. So I thought I would start another thread and ask for some peoples ideas/opinions.
Im a big fan of graffiti and try to follow local shows and expos whenever possible. Style in Progress has put on some great shows and produced some amazing art.
I think it was last year that the event @ Dundas Sq didnt take place because of lack of funding.
Speaking to few artists many of them produce work and sell work on canvas. Thier graffiti isnt always the large scale work you see behind a building. It isnt always thrown up illegaly without the permission of building owners.
It is %100 a legit art from that by some is saught after. I myself own a couple of paintings on large scale canvases.
I went to a graffiti show in Pickering last year. It was a decent show with a decent turn out, but not really enuff money to do everything that was promissed at the event.
It got me thinking, I would like to have an event that would truly showcase that art work. Perhaps put a new twist on it and show people something they have never seen before.
With that the idea of "Canvas Crimes" or "Crimes on Canvas" was born.
The idea was simple, model the event after a few other events I had seen. Most times the artists come out to showcase what they can do. Other times there is a pize. Without giving all the details the idea was to provide a cash prize for the top three paintings. Lets say no more then $300/350 in total. As at other expos the artists would have to bring or purchase thier own paint which would be available to all at a discount price. The canvases would be provided by myself (or other promoter).
The overall idea was the art work would later be displayed at a friends restaraunt in Yorkville and available for sale. If sold the promoter and artist would split the amount.
Anyone else have an interest in graffiti ? Or any other ideas that they think could work ? Or even know an artist ? By all means post.
thanks
