I'm not going to base my opinions on what "could have" happened. I am basing it on what I saw. I am sure that if Vince was trying to paint Bret into a corner as you suggest Bret would have mentioned that on his Off The Record interview which took place on the Monday after WM weekend. He certainly didn't hold back on other things.
Bottom line is that he has come across as a hypocritical, egotistical, selfish man who is only concered about putting himself over.

The whole screwjob thing would have been avoided one way. If Bret did his job (excuse the pun) When you got to work and your boss tells you to do something as a employee you should do it. Now is that totally unreasonable to ask employee to do the task they were assigned to do. I don't think so.
Now the screwjob might have helped Bret out in the long run. How many wrestlers who have been inactive from a company for nearly 9 years still have their names chanted in arenas. Would have the Bret Hart dvd came out and done so well if it wasnt for the screwjob (i am sure there would have been a dvd and done well just trying to make a point). Again just my two cents. Not saying i am right but that is my take on it.

Do his job? I think you'r missing the story. Vince wanted Bret to lose the title, but Bret convinced Vince to let him hold it in his home country. Vince was heard on tape saying he'll let Bret win the match.
That's the screwjob right there. Vince changed the finish of a main event world title match in front of the world.
Maybe Bret's ego pushed Vince's ego into overdrive.

but you missed my point. if Bret didnt bitch and whine and let his ego get into it in the first place there would have been no screwjob. Vince had to protect his interests. Again it would be guessing if Bret would have gone to WCW with the title. Vince couldnt allow that to happen. Vince did what he had to do. I think any of us in the same place and time would have done the same thing.
You cant always believe what you hear either. Who knows that tape could have been edited to make it seem that way. Maybe it wasnt edited. None of us were there to know for sure. And none of us know what really were going through the minds of both of them at the time.
I am sure Vince did what he felt he needed to do at the time. Maybe today Vince wouldnt think that would have been needed but hindsight is 20/20. Everyone just always seems to see it from Brets point of view. But Vince had big stakes in this and just wanted to look out for what he has built. Can't fully blame a guy for wanting to do that.

Bret was on that tape too and he wasn't bitching and whining, he was giving his case in a professional manner. He gave his blood, sweat and tears to that company for years. He stepped into that ring and did everything that was told of him for years, but once he decides his time is up and he wants to go out a winner, his own boss betrays him and your are going to defend Vince McMahon on this? Vince is the one who let his ego get the best of him just for publicity purposes. Bret Hart's attitude change AFTER the screwjob. This is about principle, which goes far beyong the call of business.

Business never Personal.
Minds will never change on this situation. I am sure we can all agree on that.

My opinion on wrestlemania is that for so long WWE has been trying to out do it's self each year and we as fans expect that now but how much more can they do, how many more options do they have that they have not tried.

I personally love Bret. I have amazing memories of the WWF in the 80's largely due to the Hart Foundation/Bulldog matches.. That being said Bret made himself look like the BIGGEST mark in the business. Not wanting to lay down in his home country? ? Sorry but Kayfabe died YEARS ago Bret. We all know it's fake... Like I said I love the guy but it has nothing to do with ego or screwjobs, bottom line Bret was too big of a mark for himself.. Like Vince said "I didn't screw Bret, Bret screwed Bret"
