Open Letter from Chris Hill...
Normally at this point I write a long post thanking everyone involved with the show. Instead I am going to address something that needs to be said, YOU ALL ARE SPOILED. There is no other explanation. When we started to do these it was fun. A lot of work but fun. Each year, we added more and more to these to build them to a level of complexity and scope that very few can touch. This past show was the largest show we have ever attempted. Over or close to fifty people with more extras than any show out there. Sunday’s show delivered a complete balanced show with something for everyone. Having now watched the show twice I believe it is tied for the best show we have done. I get on the board the next day and what do I see? Nothing but complaints, and really nit picking whining complaints at that.
I ranted a bit and I retract nothing. For those that chimed in on the negative I ask you to think about all of the hard work that it takes to do a show with the size and scope of the BPB’s. Think about the number of people that have to push themselves non-stop for weeks to arrange travel, design shirts and programs, prepare the video production etc.
I am always going to be aligned with the event and I understand that. I am the lightning rod. But there are a huge host of people who all contribute to the shows success. Think about those people before you take the shots. Why not wait until later to vent your frustrations. Better yet why don’t you produce your own show? Why don’t you do it? You know why you won’t? Because you can’t.
I have watched these shows fall under the same scrutiny as the WWE and TNA receives. We are compared to their standard. While on one hand that is flattering on the other hand there is a realization that an impossible benchmark has been created. They are a full time production crew of hundreds and we are a handful of associates who are working their real job in addition to creating the show.
If you notice I have never criticized a workers performance. I may have an opinion and I may say I liked one match more than another but I will never criticize because I have never done it. The only bumps I take involve frosting. Being critical is the easiest thing to do. It takes no intelligence. It is the path of least resistance. To tear down something is easy. To create something is the hardest road to travel on.
How about instead of leading in with complaints you speak to what you enjoyed. If you didn’t enjoy anything then why are you on this board? There can be no constructive criticism if everything is negative. I’ll start…how about the work some of the local guys did? Brodie Lee represented well. Kevin Dunn had the elimination of the night. (and no, no one was hurt). The pre-show especially Atlas and McChesney were outstanding and Big Cat got the early pop of the night. Only to be one upped by the absolutely amazing performance by Cody Deaner. These guys were on the biggest stages of their career and they nailed it. Awesome job.
Was it perfect? No. Was it one of our best, absolutely! I have no issue with criticism but I will always defend this show. Not because of what my involvement is but because of all of the hard work that so many people put in. People who are non-wrestling fans as well as fans. When the first words out of your mouth are critical then you deserve to get an earful.
Wonder why other promoters and workers don’t take shots at any of the shows? Because they know the work that goes into any show. Let alone the largest one shot in the US. They know the frustrations and the amount of unreimbursed time and energy it takes.
The past couple of months this board has just been a collection of complaints and I am sick of it. The object is not to kiss my * but you need to appreciate the scope of these shows. You also need to appreciate the fact that, other than the talent, no one gets paid to do it. Some got Pearl Street coupons and for some they get some drinks and food on my tab but that is about it. I am not Hellcat. With Upstate that is his business, his money. For the BPB’s I am proud we crushed the field seat record. But I still got paid the same…$0. You want to criticize Upstate’s shows then fire it up and he has to listen because it could affect his bottom line. Not me.
This winter I fought for these shows. I put myself out there to convince the powers that be that we need these shows. I will not do that again. At $0 it is not worth the aggravation and stress that comes along with it. Without the BPB’s I would have had a great weekend with my family. Instead I didn’t see them, haven’t slept well in weeks and have been on weather.com non-stop. Then after an awesome show that delivered I see nothing but complaints. Maybe my boss was right and we should take a year off. Of course, I know what that leads to…which is why I defended it non-stop this winter. Maybe he is right. You all are spoiled.
Sure, you can criticize and take shots all you want. Your right you absolutely have a right to. Go ahead proclaim your frustrations loud and clear for all to read. Next year, enjoy the WWE house shows. Or better yet enjoy the eight hour ride to a ROH or JAPW show.
Hopefully their shows will start on time and not have any no shows.
Hopefully their vignettes will not bother you, oh wait there won’t be any. Never mind
Hopefully their promoters will respond to every email that is sent.
Hopefully their surprises will be up to your expectations. If not hopefully they will have some.
Hopefully their shows will be short so your attention span doesn’t get challenged.
Hopefully their shows will be free of political bs.
Hopefully their post match party will cater to your every whim.
I am tired, I am sore, and I am sick and tired of people complaining over the most minute detail. I get zero appreciation for doing this show internally. If now externally that is the case then obviously there is no reason for me to be involved. The shows are successful so maybe the team will want to do it again. Hopefully there will be someone internally that will fight to have the shows.
