Due to time constraints, this is going to be a quick report. DGUSA debuted in Union City, NJ at the ACE arena on Sunday. Despite running the same day as WWE's Royal Rumble, DGUSA drew a sold out crowd and had a very loud audience.
The event was taped for PPV. The show started a bit late due to problems getting a camera working, but no one seemed to mind. The regular Union City fans saw a show that was definitely different from everything else that runs there, due to the style of the Japanese Dragon Gate stars. The Tozawa vs BB Hulk match is automatically a match that should be considered for match of the year consideration.
Larry Legend was your ring announcer, who also handled announcing duties at Friday's NYC show.
Quick Results:
Brodie Lee d. Rich Swann in an extended squash match. Swann was funny ducking Lee for most of the match, but when Lee caught him, he killed Swann with a series of moves. The story was that Swann would not give up and would kick out of several big moves, until he was finally put away.
A long promo was up next setting up an 8-man tag for later on. This felt like it went forever. I do like the role Lee has and he's mighty impressive for a guy his size.
AR Fox d. Cheech. Solid match, with AR Fox almost being AR Dead after a suicide dive near a steel guard rail.
Tozawa d. BB Hulk in a MOTYC. Awesome pacing, awesome moves, just a match to go out of your way to see. This is the best match live I've seen in some time.
A promo building the 8 man tag was up next, with Jimmy Jacobs and Austin Aries.
Jon Moxley d. Homicide in a no rules match. Crazy match. Moxley's nose was broken by Homicide. Homicide cut up his elbow. Both men needed medical attention after the match.
The story here was that Homicide killed Moxley. Homicide then let Moxley pin him, as he put Moxley over him. Homicide then beat up Moxley more, then tried to cut Moxley's tongue out with scissors. Tozawa made the save.
I thought this was a realistic match and wild, but I don't know why Homicide would just lay down and put Moxley on top of him. Homicide said he didn't care about wins or losses and all he cared about was killing Moxley, but I thought that would've made sense if he got DQ'd or counted out. But to just let him pin him was kinda weird and the finish felt flat. But a crazy match, with both guys beating the hell out of each other.
After an intermission, Rex Reed d. Pinkie Sanchez in a short match.
Cima/Naruki Doi/Dragon Kid/Richochet d. Jimmy Jacobs/Austin Aries/Yamato/Sami Callihan
Very good match, but the finish was kinda out of nowhere and anti climatic after everything that happened. I guess wins can happen at any time. Callihan really shined here and it felt like a match that brought him to a higher level.
Pac & Yoshino d. Chuck Taylor & Johnny Gargano to become the first ever DGUSA Tag Champs.
In closing, I thought this was a good event and you can see why DGUSA gets a lot of buzz. It should be interesting to see if DGUSA keeps these triple shots as a regular thing. Go out of your way to see Tozawa/Hulk.
